Investigations were undertaken to elucidate the mechanism of the Ni-- F reaction with respect to which species, metal or nonmetal, is the principal migrant through the nickel fluoride scale. Impinging scale and radioactive tracer methods were used. The results obtained for both types of marker experiments indicated that fluorine, rather than nickel, migrates through the fluoride scale during the course of the reaction. It is most probable that the mechanism involves the transport of fluorine through the bulk of the nickel fluoride scale. (P.C.H.)
