Abstract The temperature dependence of density p, in terephthalylidene bis-p-n-octylaniline (TBOA) is carried out to probe the phase transitions, associated volume jumps, order of the transitions and pretransitional effects. The compound exhibits smectic A, smectic C, smectic F, smectic G and smectic H phases. The smectic A-isotropic and smectic F-smectic C are found to be first order. The smectic C-smectic A and smectic G-smectic F transitions are second order and the calculated thermal expansion coefficient, α, also supported the density results.
