Abstract A novel planar ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with 3.5/5.5 GHz dual band‐notched characteristics is presented. The antenna consists of a radiation patch which has an arc‐shaped edge and a partially modified ground plane with a tapered microstrip feeder line. These designs improve the input impedance bandwidth with the operating band covering the whole UWB frequency range (3.1–10.6 GHz). By etching two nested U‐shaped slots in the radiation patch, band‐rejected filtering properties in the worldwide interoperability for microwave access/wireless local area network bands are achieved. Parametric studies are presented to investigate the effect of the antenna geometrical parameters on its performance. Measured results confirm that the antenna is suitable for UWB applications due to its compact size and high performance. A single band‐notched UWB antenna is also provided for references. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 53:370–375, 2011; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
