THE SYNDROME bearing Wernicke's name was first documented by Gayet (1875). Wernicke (1881) described three cases, two occurring in chronic alcoholics, the other following sulphuric acid poisoning. Wechsler (1932) appears to be the first person to associate this encephalopathy with a vitamin deficiency. Jolliffe, Wortis & Fein
