Summary When a group of judges rank a collection of objects one might be interested in two questions : (i) What is the “true” or underlying order of the objects? and (ii) How homogeneously do the judges act? In this paper we investigate the ramifications, with respect to these questions, of a model originally proposed by Mallows (1957). It is shown that the model fits well to an empirical data set.
