The problem of determining the degree of polymerization and the number of discrete silicate anions in both acid and basic silicate melts has been investigated in order to apply ionic theory to binary and ternary silicate method has been developed for determining the most probable number of anions in any acid or basic slag in terms of an equilibrium constant involving singly bonded Oxygen, doubly bonded and free Oxygen ions in the melt. Some ionic forms of the Gibbs-Duhem equation have been derived and have been used to calculate the activity of Fe2+, Ca2+ and O2− ions in the CaO-FeO-SiO2 system at 1,600°C. The practical application of the derived ionic relationshps illustrated with several examples.
