Abstract

The authors describe the emission characteristics of a Cs+ ion field-emitter, consisting of a sharply pointed Ni needle (apex radius of curvature approximately 0.1 mu m) wetted with liquid Cs and continuously fed via a capillary reservoir in which the lower part of the needle resides. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the field-evaporation theory.
