Abstract

Dr Newell's general ophthalmology textbook marks its 20th anniversary with a new, sixth edition. Intended for those with little ophthalmic sophistication, the text is particularly useful for medical students as an introduction to the specialty. The general physician will also appreciate its clarity, breadth of information, and lack of ophthalmic jargon. The text comprises four sections. The first, dealing with basic sciences, covers anatomy, physiology, embryology, and pharmacology in a succinct, readable format. It is well illustrated with numerous diagrams and photomicrographs. The pharmacology chapter is particularly complete and current. Part 2 addresses the ocular history and physical examination, with chapters on both functional and physical examination of the eyes. It provides an overview of the goals of the eye examination as well as the methods particular to ophthalmology, while avoiding in-depth, technical descriptions of optics, biomicroscopy, and ophthalmoscopy.
