Abstract Three types of Pb c [001] centres) are found in a KBr:PbBr 2 crystal. The luminescence of all these centres is caused by electronic transitions from tetragonal minima of the adiabatic potential energy surface (APES) of the triplet excited state of the Pb 2+ ion. A comparison of the spectral, polarization and kinetic characteristics of their emission is performed. The position and structure of the defect associated with the Pb 2+ ion are shown to have strong influence on the luminescence properties of KBr:PbBr 2 2+ v dipole and interstitial bromine atom associates (H z (Pb 2+ ) centres) as well as a Pb 2+ ion associated with the next‐nearest‐neighbouring cation vacancy (Pb 2+ v − crystal.
