Abstract Overall water splitting was accomplished using a RuO2–TaON and Pt–TaON mixture with IO3−/I− redox couple under visible light (λ<500 nm). This is the first example of overall water splitting based on an oxynitride photocatalyst including a transition-metal element with d0-electronic configuration.
