An unnamed and unclassified gas-vacuolated, facultatively anaerobic rod was characterized phenotypically and genotypically by deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-DNA hybridization. It most closely resembles members of the genus Aeromonas in the family Vibrionaceae. However, it differs phenotypically from the genus Aeromonas, and a low level of relatedness to its members was observed (11 to 22%). For these reasons, a new genus and species, Enhydrobacter aerosaccus, is proposed for this organism within the family Vibrionaceae.
