Abstract

Twenty-six compounds were screened via electrochemical measurements to detect any corrosion inhibition properties on carbon steel and AISI 304 316 stainless steels in simulated SO2 scrubber solutions. N-lauroylsarcosine (NLS) and related compounds inhibited localized corrosion of the stainless steels. Inhibition by NLS was confirmed in both short-term potential scan and in coupon tests. Effects of varying the inhibitor structure and possible mechanisms of inhibition are discussed. Increases in sulfide concentration, chloride concentration, and temperature, or lower pH values increased corrosivity of the scrubbing solution.
