This Paper develops the theoretical basis and presents the results of experimental studies to determine a fractal dimension associated with soil microstructure. The topics addressed include the development of techniques for obtaining images of real soils in a format suitable for analysis, the development of imageprocessing techniques for extracting the fractal characteristics of the image, the development of a rational analytical basis for determining the fractal dimension associated with soil microstructure, the analyses required to quantify the fractal dimension of the soil samples tested, and parameter studies to determine the effect of particle angularity, grain size distribution and sample density on the fractal dimensions of selected sands.
