Abstract

An unprecedented two-dimensional water−chloride anionic {[(H 2 O) 20 (Cl) 4 ] 4– } n network has been structurally identified in a hydrophobic matrix of the iron(II) compound [FeL 2 ]Cl 2 ·10H 2 O (L = 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine). Its intricate relief geometry has been described as a set of 10 nonequivalent alternating cycles of different sizes ranging from tetra- to octanuclear {[(H 2 O) x (Cl) y ] y – } z ( x = 2–6, y = 0–2, z = 4–6, 8) fragments.
