This paper discusses the construction of the dispersionrelation‐preserving (DRP) finite difference operators for the second derivative and their application for the numerical simulation of the acoustic wave propagation. The proposed operators, with enhanced dispersion properties, have the same stencil as the conventional finite difference method. Numerical tests on the 2‐D scalar wave equation show that 3 grid points at the Nyquist frequency are adequate for the forward modeling problem with the new derived 5‐point finite difference operator.
