A retrospective study of 41 pregnancies in 30 patients who received antithyroid medication during pregnancy is presented. Five of these pregnancies resulted in infants with neonatal goiter; an additional 5 of the pregnancies resulted in fetal death. The dosage of propylthiouracil appeared to be important in the development of goiter in the offspring, but was probably not the only factor. Maternal hypothyroidism, iodide therapy, control of the hyperthyroidism, and a family history of thyroid disease were evaluated. The serum BEI of 3 of the goitrous infants was in the hypothyroid range, while maternal values were in the normal range for pregnancy. The treatment of the hyperthyroid patient during pregnancy is discussed.
