The retraction syndrome described by Duane in I905 comprises complete or less often partial absence of abduction, with retraction of the affected eye into the orbit and narrow- ing of the palpebral fissure on adduction. There is often an upshoot or downshoot of the globe on adduction. On attempted abduction there is usually slight protrusion of the globe with widening of the palpebral aperture.
