The strain failure criterion previously proposed by the first author is applied to obtain solutions for the angled elliptic notch problem subject to compressive and tensile loads. The theory compares favorably with experiments in both cases. This indicates that the proposal of the crack plane being normal to the direction of the maximum tensile strain for brittle fracture is essentially correct.
