Abstract

Abstract Novel mixed-ligand cyanonitrosyl {MnNO} 6 complexes of manganese (I), formed by the interaction of pentacyanonitrosyl-manganate(l) anion, [Mn(NO)(CN)5]3-, with potentially monodentate pyridine derivatives, viz., 2-hydroxymethylpyridine (2-HMPY, I), 3-hydroxymethylpyridine (3-HMPY, II), 4-hydroxymethylpyridine (4-HMPY, III), 2-(4-chlorobenzyl) pyridine (2-CBPY, IV) and pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6) (PDX, V), bidentate pyridine derivatives like 2-aminopyridine (2-APY, VI), 3-aminopyridine (3-APY, VII) and nicotinamide (NICA, VIII) and potentially tridentate pyridine derivatives, isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INAH, IX) and picolinic acid hydrazide (PAH, X) are described. The resulting mixed-ligand complexes, which have been characterized by analytical data, electrical conductances, magnetic measurements and infrared spectral, studies, have the general formula [Mn(NO) (CN)2(L)2(H20)], (where L = I, II, III, IV, V, VIII, IX or X) and [Mn(NO) (CN)2(L-L) (H2O)] (where L-L = VI or VII). Suitable octahedral structures have been proposed for the complexes. Manganese (I) has a low-spin {MnNO}6 electron configuration1 in these complexes.
