ESR and Optical Spectra of Low-spin Square Planar Cobalt(II) Complexes with Some Quadridentate Schiff Bases of the N2S2 Type

Abstract ESR and electronic spectra of low-spin cobalt(II) complexes with some quadridentate Schiff bases of the N2S2 type were measured. Analysis of ESR parameters led to the conclusion that an unpaired electron is in the dyz orbital of the cobalt atom. On this basis the absorption at 10×103 cm−1 was attributed to the dx2−y2→dyz transition.
