The invitation to review this volume was extended with such graciousness that a refusal would have been impossible, even though at the moment of acceptance it seemed that the assignment might be likened to that of reviewing an unabridged dictionary. Actually, the reading proved to be not only richly rewarding, but also a constant delight and satisfaction. There can be no hesitation in describing this as the most comprehensive, most authoritative, and most helpful of the six volumes published under the same general title by the New York Heart Association since 1928. It is also the handsomest, being beautifully printed on glossy paper which seems perfect for the admirable photographic illustrations and drawings. There are 174 of these in the form of photomicrographs (pathology), drawings (roentgenology), and electrocardiograms. These have been selected judiciously and reproduced beautifully. The nomenclature has been extended considerably, and the criteria for diagnosis are uniformly impressive
