A bioassay method for determining penetration of antimicrobial agents through the epidermis into the corium is presented. Penicillin, erythromycin, thiabendazole, tolnaftate, and others show definite evidence of penetration by this method of measurement. Vehicles vary in their ability to effect transport of antimicrobial agents through the epidermis. Dimethylacetamide appears to be the most effective of those studied.
