Abstract

Species of Blechnum, Doodia, Woodwardia, Lorinseria and Stenochlaena were studied morphologically and genetically in an effort to obtain information relating to their reproductive biology. Woodwardia martinezii and Stenochlaena palustris were found to be apogamous.Lorinseria areolata, Blechnum unilaterale and B. nudum were found to be adapted for intra-gametophytic selling. Fifteen other sexual taxa were investigated and all were found to have adaptations making intergametophytic mating very likely. Thus of the 18 sexual taxa for which data are available, 8.33% have intergametophytic mating systems.
