Studies in the Bangiaceae: structure and reproduction of the conchocelis of Porphyra and Bangia in culture (Bangiales, Rhodophyceae)

Abstract

General observations are presented on the form and development in culture of the conchocelis of twenty-two species of Bangia and Porphyra from the coasts of the east Pacific and north Atlantic Oceans. Variations between species are seen in characteristics such as spore germination, form of the filaments and modes of reproduction. Observations with scanning and transmission electron microscopes have emphasized a number of structural details.
