Abstract

Abstract A central force lattice dynamical model, previously applied by Slaggie to the CaF 2 structure of ZrH 2 , is extended to the BiF 3 structure. It is used for the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering data on cerium hydrides CeH 1.98 and CeH 2.72 . For both samples the force constants are derived. The values of the corresponding force constants in both hydrides are different. The additional hydrogen in the CeH 2 structure is found to be weakly bound.
