Alkaline phosphatase activity in Oscillatoria erythraea ( Trichodesmium ) has been repeatedly demonstrated at the time of collection of the alga from the low‐nutrient waters of the Strait of Florida, suggesting a mechanism of fulfilling a phosphate requirement complementary to the capacity of this species to fix nitrogen.
