Abstract

Abstract This article analyzes three widely used learning styles inventories (4MAT System, McCarthy, 1987; Dunn's LSI, 1992a & 1992b; and Renzulli and Smith's LSI, 1998) and matches them to the most compatible teaching strategies. Tables are provided to summarize the characteristics of left/right brain hemispheric learners and assist teachers in selecting the most appropriate teaching strategies. Examples of lessons are presented that illustrate how teachers may encourage bilateral learning by integrating both brain hemispheres and combining teaching strategies. To help teachers determine their students’ learning preferences, there are suggestions for selecting and designing learning styles inventories. Finally, practical implications of training teachers to address learning styles preferences is discussed.
