Abstract

Abstract To study single magnetic flux lines in superconductors a Vortex‐Microscope is developed and the motion is investigated of a single vortex through a superconducting thin film. Extremely small jumps between pinning centers are observed, which are compatible with the Anderson model of flux creep. The motion of a single vortex is thermally activated in agreement with the flux‐creep model. Henceforth the interactions of single flux lines and well defined pinning centers can be studied by vortex‐microscopical observations.
