Abstract This article presents a very compact printed antenna for various ultra‐wideband (UWB) applications. The antenna structure comprises of a loop‐shaped radiating element with a trapezium shaped ground plane, and it uses a tapered coplanar waveguide feed line for excitation. The antenna exhibits a 10 dB impedance bandwidth from 3.34 to 16.3 GHz, which constitutes about 132%. The antenna radiates omnidirectionally in the H‐plane over the UWB band defined by Federal Communication Commission. The antenna dimensions are restricted to 10 mm × 18 mm × 1.6 mm. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 54:560–564, 2012; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
