Core soundings carried out in the Malia marsh have established the major stages in the evolution of the environment of the archaeological site between 6500 BC and the present day. For the time being, the study only takes account of the sedimentary data and carbon 14 dates. Several sequences have been identified. The first (6400-4700 BC) corresponds to the filling up ofthe depression; the second (4700-1500 BC) covers the formation and evolution ofthe marsh itself; the third (not dated) reveals a short marine event; the fourth (190 BC-414 AD) denotes the reestablishment of the marsh; and the fifth (from 414 BC to the présent) shows that the surface of the marsh evolves in relation to the more or less interior outline of the littoral belt. Sequence 3 might correspond to the tsunami caused by explosion of the Santorini volcano, but it could equally correspond to the earthquake of 365 AD, which caused a considerable tilting movement in Crete, the southwest corner being raised from 8 to 10 metres, and the northeast section subsiding at the same time.
