The occasional clinical reports have been supported by studies with experimental animals, and indicate some association of unknown mechanism between tetracycline and an elevation in blood urea or non-protein nitrogen. Metabolic studies performed by Gabuzdaet al. (3) and Faloonet al. (4-6) in patients reportedly without significant renal disease indicated that members of this group of antibiotics were capable of increasing urinary nitrogen excretion.
