In a series of 1,536 patients, image-separating properties of the transverse section scan increased detection specificity and sensitivity and also improved topographic description and evaluation of lesions. The section method demonstrated medial boundaries of lesions, often obscured in the rectilinear views because of radioactivity in overlying venous sinuses and underlying basal structures; helped confirm presence or absence of multicentric uptake; showed lesion shape in transverse plane; allowed side-to-side comparison of asymmetric surface lesions and demonstrated depth of involvement beneath the surface; permitted a better appreciation of regional differences in growth and vascularity within a lesion.
