Values of the free energy of transfer of the proton, ΔGt°(H+), from water into water + dimethylsulphoxide have been calculated as described earlier for other co-solvents using spectrophotometric measurements. Values of ΔGt°(X–) are then produced from ΔGt°(HX), and these ΔGt°(X–) used to produce values for ΔGt°(Mn+) from the free energies of transfer of salts. In general, ΔGt° for anions are positive and ΔGt° for cations are negative; these are compared with values obtained with other co-solvents added to water.
