Abstract The experimentally observed phonon curves for Al are reproduced using second‐order perturbation theory and the local Heine‐Abarenkov model potential with volume‐dependent parameters. The effect of different forms of exchange and correlations on the phonon frequency, the compressibility problem, and the contributions from the third‐order perturbation term are investigated.
