ROOTS 561 of N. tetrasperma is broken down in the interspecific crosses. The lethal, I, which usually acts to prevent the full development of the color and the amounts of conidia in the combination aOI, in races of N.tetrasperma no longer has this effect in interspecific crosses. That is, lethal races of N. tetrasperma which produce rather pale conidia, crossed with an albino non-conidial but otherwise normal N. sitophila give many different types of progeny which vary from albino non-conidial races to races with masses of bright orange color conidia.
