Abstract

This volume contains a selection of essays by different authors. The essays have as a common theme the role of demographic change since the mid-nineteenth century in explaining some of the topics of present-day social concern in Britain. Chapters are included on unemployment and its relationship with resources and population factors changing conditions for children regional and temporal variations in household structure the decline in mortality improvements in the nations health working wives and their families and the impact of immigration on British society. The book is designed for the general reader and as a textbook for the undergraduate.
