Abstract The application of chemical oxidation for the reduction of refractory organic content of the leachate originating from a stabilised landfill has been studied. The experimental results indicate that the oxidation process occurs in a reasonably good time and significant amount of the organics present are converted to CO2, about 35%. Ammonia is not easily oxidised, the conversion being less than 20%. Although by chemical oxidation significant quantities of the pollutants are removed, further leachate treatment is required for its safe disposal.
