Abstract The permanent surface distortions surrounding pressure crack figures on diamond surfaces have been studied by optical and x-ray topographic means. It is shown that the distortions are completely consistent with a permanent elastic deformation due to poor healing of the internal cracks. There appear to be no grounds for assuming that any micro-plastic flow has occurred.
