Abstract

A very important isotopic effect for the ratio of molecular and atomic hydrogen yield in the photolysis of ammonia at 147 and 123.6 nm has been found [Formula: see text] while at 185 nm [Formula: see text].The dissociation NH 3 + hv → (X 3 Σ − ) + H + H occurs for wavelengths as high as 147 nm which implies that D NH−H ≤ 90 kcal mol −1 .The rate constant of the reaction D + ND 3 → D 2 + ND 2 has been evaluated [Formula: see text].
