Abstract The decline in recruitment of glass eels, elvers and young yellow eels to the Skagerrak‐Kattegat area in Sweden was demonstrated by catch data from trawl hauls at sea (IKMWT) and from eel ladders in two rivers emptying in the Kattegat. A long term decline since the 1940's was indicated and the same short term decrease as observed in other European countries during the 1980's was proved.
