SUMMARY A high frequency of Escherichia coli was noted in this investigation. Of the primary isolates from 212 patients with bacterial counts of more than 100,000 organisms per millilitre urine, 169 (79–7 per cent.) had a pure culture of Escherichia coli. Although there was no significant difference in the frequency of Escherichia coli isolated from the sexes there was a highly significant reduced frequency of isolation of the organism in those patients with urinary tract abnormality.
