The behavior of levitating diamagnetic materials is investigated in gradient magnetic fields produced by a hybrid magnet. The levitating alignment of bismuth particles and the levitating orientation of a paraffin rod are reported, and these behaviors are discussed based on their potential energy curves in the magnet, the interaction among diamagnetic moments and the shape anisotropy.
