Why migrate before AVO? A simple example

Abstract

A few papers in the joint SEG/EAEG 1992 summer research workshop on AVO demonstrated the benefit of prestack migration before AVO analysis (e.g., Keho et al. 1992). This study attempts to quantify this benefit relative to a traditional AVO analysis with an elastic synthetic example. Specifically, the goal is to evaluate if migration can improve AVO inversion even in 1-D type geology, where no diffractions and lateral variations occur. The software tools used here are considered to be current in term of applicability.
