Tumour stage and grade correlated with DSS in this cohort, with no improvement in outcome over the 18-year period assessed. Patients with high-stage and high-grade disease continue to fare poorly, suggesting a need for changing the treatment protocol. Judiciously applying a multimodal approach to the management of high-risk patients by incorporating neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical resection might provide, for the first time, the opportunity to improve patient outcome.
