Summary The occurrence of Coelopa was plotted around the mainland of Great Britain and was found to be made up of an irregular distributed series of colonies each centred upon a site of recurrent deposition of ‘wrack-beds’. The pattern of events at a single colony was observed over 2 years and a generalized description of the variability encountered in the life of the colony is given. Finally, the degree of isolation between colonies is discussed.
