S ummary . A technique for isolating cellulolytic bacteria from the large intestine of the horse is described. Isolates included two Gram‐negative rods resembling some members of the genus Bacteroides , a Gram‐negative sporeforming organism resembling Bacillus cellulosae dissolvens and several other unidentified bacteria. Some of the latter resembled cellulolytic bacteria isolated from the rumen in the past.
