Abstract Polariton effect and its polarization dependence were studied in ZnO tapered whispering gallery (WG) microcavity at room temperature. By scanning the excitation along the tapered arm of ZnO tetrapod with different polarizations, the photo‐exciton coupling strength were continuingly tuned and thus the resonant interaction between the WG optical modes and the excitons with different dipole orientation are clearly resolved. The experimental observations were well described by the plane wave model with excitonic polariton dispersions. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
