The development of cavity ionisation theory is briefly reviewed. The general validity of a recent theory is investigated using a clear Perspex dosemeter. The atomic number of the surrounding medium was varied from 6 to 82. The dimensions of the dosemeter were varied from a size where the dosemeter's response was largely determined by electrons entering from the surrounding medium up to a size where the response was determined solely by the electrons generated by photon interactions within the dosemeter. No significant deviation of experiment from theory was noted over the entire range. It is concluded that the general cavity theory is valid for all dosemeters in photon fields.
