A calorimeter has been constructed to measure energy losses of hospitalized patients. We report herewith the first direct measurements of energy losses by a severely burned patient during various treatment phases. We observed extremely high energy demands during the initial phase of the burn wound, and later the efficacy of pigskin heterografts in diminishing those losses.
