IXCE THE year 1947 it has been known that S as a rule homogenates of human tumor tissues assay higher with respect to fi-glucuronidase activityl-417 than do the adjacent uninvolved tissues. It was considered at that time that different types of cells might contribute enzyme activity to the total homogenate mixture. No inferences were drawn as to the /+glucuronidase activity of cancer cells. However, the need to examine tumors in order to identify the cellular sites of enzyme activity was recognized, and the desirability of the histochemical approach was also evident.
